When Snape Maltings proposed to expand their car park, Suffolk-born composer Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian wanted to start a project about local endangered species and human progress. This led to 1000 Songs, the start of a retelling of an Armenian folktale imagined by writer Ziazan and devised by director Seta White. Set in a dystopian near-future, a biologist is abused by the media for withholding a technology that would inhibit the migration instinct of endangered species. She goes into hiding with the prototype, a nightingale.
Cevanne and Seta will be discovering the story’s environment in the landscape that inspired it and, working with Ziazan and the local community, will explore the shared space in which the story speaks to them. They are using this vital period of reflection and experimentation to strengthen their creative language using multi-media installation. This follows on from a busy period which saw their work performed at the Grimeborn Opera Festival. They look forward to sharing their findings.
